Week 81 Game
roll the dice
writinggame wrote in writing_game
Chess board courtesy of clairshadows. Prompts by benebu.

This game is also posted on dreamwidth, here. You may play on either site.

The goal of Writing Game is not to make multiple rounds around the board, but to accumulate as many points as possible.

You may switch fandoms/worlds whenever you first pass 20 points, 40, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, then free for all.
e.g. Total points: 19. Complete a +3 prompt.
This brings you to 22 points. At this point you may switch fandoms/worlds.

There will be no post secret this week

On this board, your movements depend not on the point value of the prompt but on what chess piece you are playing at that moment. Roll the dice to determine your chess piece.

Exceptions:
1a) You are at a Player’s Choice square. Move up, right, down or left according to the point value of the prompt(s).
1b) If the PC square's point value exceeds the board's limits, you should stay in the same column or the same row.
e.g. You're on the red PC square between R and G, going "Up" 3 squares. You stay in the same column but go back to the bottom line, arriving at H square.

2) When skipping a prompt, a pawn may move backwards as many squares as the point value of the prompt.

3) When a pawn reaches the top row (the C-A-PC-J-K-F-B-Q row), it turns into a queen.

Chess piece rules, courtesy of elalone:
1 - King: You may move one square in any direction.
2 - Queen: You may move any number of squares, in any direction.
3 - Rook: You may move any number of squares, either horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally.
4 - Bishop: You may move any number of squares diagonally, but not horizontally or vertically.
5 - Knight: You may move two squares vertically and one horizontally, or two squares horizontally and one vertically (L-shape)
6 - Pawn: You may move only up. On your first move, you may go one or two squares. Afterwards, you may only move one square at a time.

All the general rules can be found in the user profile. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Home Roll the dice to determine your chess piece:
1 - king, 2 - queen, 3 - rook, 4 - bishop, 5 - knight, and 6 - pawn.
Start on any square you want on the bottom two rows.

rather in a truth-speaking vein I am not young; I have never been young! You can't break a ray of moonshine
like half ripened plums, only good eating on the side that has had a glimpse of the sun befriend him by stealth dropping stones in her soul and waiting to hear them fall
put up prayers for fair winds I might as well be in love here as in the streets seen before in a goddess, but never in a woman
foredoomed to moulder and crumble and become dust no such thing as to-morrow like diagrams of human nature
I am corrupt, corrupting, corruption! a chronic heartache the sort of man one makes one's hero of

Let's see if preview function works...

Testing on Google Chrome...

Yeesh font size looks so small in customized comment pages ~_~

Preview function probably doesn't work on Chrome...

Yep that didn't work on Chrome.

I hate ads on Plus accts =/ I feel like I'm on a download site or smth. Gonna try looking for a layout where the ads don't look that intrusive. Not holding my breath...

The original layout was Powell Street

Right now it's Minimalist Bloggish. Better than Powell Street but it still cuts up the board =/
Need a non-Bloggish layout.

ETA: Mobile Theme Tranquility II. Font size is unacceptably TINY.

ETA2: Cardboard Minimalism. It's...okay for a definition of 'okay.' I'm switching back to Basic account (and Powell Street layout) until I can figure this out. At this rate this comm. would probably look like all the kink meme LJ comm.s out there. Dunno if I can do a CSS thing when not on a paid account though.

Going with Minimalism: "Basic Functionality"

from this code, like 99% of all LJ kink meme comm.s out there.

I'm kinda sad that now so many LJs look the same, but functionality > having the same layout.

Having the boxes not look like boxes is weird *squints*, but at least now the board isn't cut off, there's only one ad at the very bottom (as opposed to on THREE SIDES), and the font size is readable.

I guess writing_game will look like this for the foreseeable future.

Testing on Google Chrome #2

Preview prolly won't work again...

Doesn't work on Chrome but works on IE. Ah well =P

Re: Testing on Google Chrome #2

Oh, wonderful! It even seem to work in my old browser! Thank you for taking the time to do this!

And about the writinggame account, feel free to change it back to the original layout, Cardboard Minimalism doesn't even work that fine for me. I've just been foolish enough to play with layouts without making note of the original one.

Re: Testing on Google Chrome #2

You're welcome =)

Changed the writinggame account too.

prompt: elephant +3
word count: 198

the elephant in the room

"Will I see you again?" Kristen says, and she can hear the desperation in her voice, the edge of neediness, and seriously, she could just fucking die right now she feels so fucking stupid because cliche, much? Younger woman falls for older, more sophisticated, way cooler woman. Kristen is never the desperate one, never, but here she is, saying dumb, whiny shit like will I see you again? like some pathetic loser.

"Sure," Charlize says, and her voice is kind, and Kristen can tell she's trying to break it to her gently but she can't help but feel condescended to. Which is entirely on her, nothing to do with Charlize, but it still stings, humiliation sharp and quick inside her chest like a knife. "But," Charlize continues, and yeah, Kristen can tell, here it comes, "I think maybe we should just be friends from now on." She smiles, her mouth closed.

"Oh yeah," Kristen says, trying not to play with her hair because she's not some teenager for fuck's sake, she's not Bella or something, whatever people say. "I think that's for the best," she says, nodding. "Definitely."

She puts her hands in her pockets. "Definitely," she says, again.

Prompt: I am corrupt, corrupting, corruption!
Points: 3 + 2 = 5
Characters/Pairing: Kristen Stewart/Jodie Foster
Word Count: 200

---

"We can't keep doing this." Jodie pushes Kristen away, folds her arms.

"Sure we can," says Kristen, her hand warm on Jodie's shoulder. "Don't be like that."

Jodie steps back, out of reach. "You're too young," she says. She doesn't know what's happening to her, to her judgment. Ever since Cydney... well. She's not making the best decisions right now, let's say.

"I'm not a child," Kristen says, pouting, looking exactly that.

Yeah, you kind of are, is what Jodie wants to say, but instead she says, "When you're older, you'll understand," wincing at the words, because she remembers what it was what like to be young and to be told that and how much she resented the person who said it to her.

But then she did get older, and she did understand, and she knows that one day Kristen will, too. But not today.

"Okay, well, fuck you," Kristen says, gathering her things and Jodie can see she's waiting for her to say something, to stop her.

Jodie stands, silent, quite still, and Kristen gives her one last look, face set somewhere between pleading and furious, before she walks out, slams the door.

It's all for the best, Jodie tells herself.

Rolled a 3, so I'm now a rook!

Prompt: yelp+1
Points: 5 + 1 = 6
Characters/Pairing: Kristen Stewart/Lily Collins
Word Count: 175

---

Lily yelps, and Kristen smirks, trying really hard not to laugh, because she kind of totally sounds like a chihuahua, which is hilarious.

Lily frowns at her. "Your hands are cold," she says, by way of explanation.

"I thought maybe it was just, you know, the electricity of my touch," Kristen says, mock-serious.

"Don't be ridiculous," Lily says, evenly, and Kristen smiles, hesitantly. She can never read this girl, never quite tell if she's in on the joke. Lily, Kristen thinks, is either a little stupid or really, really smart but it's basically impossible to tell which. And that's maybe the reason Kristen hasn't yet gotten bored with her, because Kristen normally gets bored with girls pretty fast.

She never seems to feel steady around Lily, like she can never find her feet, and it's interesting and kind of weird but also hot. "Kiss me," she says, and Lily smiles at her, turning up her face, like she's offering herself, her mouth, and Kristen licks her lips before leaning in.

Yeah, she likes this girl.

prompt: bottle blonde +3
points: 6 + 3 = 9
characters/pairing: Dakota Fanning/Kristen Stewart
word count: 187

---

"How often do you dye your hair?" Kristen asks, fingers combing through the strands, white-blonde locks soft but somehow brittle, breakable. Like glass, Kristen thinks, and if that isn't a metaphor for something, for this whole situation, then she doesn't know what is.

She's drunk. She only ever gets this philosophical when she's drunk.

Dakota, of course, is sober, because Dakota's always sober, sensible. That's just who she is. "A lot," she answers. "I have to have it touched up a lot."

Kristen nods, slowly, watching the room gently spin. It's kind of soothing. "I don't think I could be bothered to do that," she says.

"It's definitely a commitment," Dakota says, and Kristen decides to ignore the way she emphasizes that last word. Instead, she shifts closer, kisses Dakota, once, twice, closed-mouthed and careful.

She smiles, pulling back, and Dakota regards her, wide-eyed and serious, until Kristen starts to laugh. "You're so..." she says, but thought remains unfinished, lost.

Dakota is the one who leans in, this time, and Kristen lets herself be kissed, closing her eyes, wondering if she'll remember this tomorrow.

She hopes so.

Back, with questions

1. When, if ever, do you change pieces? Player above has me confused. Doh, never mind, I've got to learn to read.
2. If a pawn is on, say, H, and goes backwards, does it become a queen when it hits the top of the board?

Edited at 2012-03-19 03:58 pm (UTC)

Re: Back, with questions

Glad to see you back. I'll be checking with the co-mod, and one of us will get back to you as soon as possible.

Re: Back, with questions

Hi!

I'm assuming you meant the H square two squares from the bottom? Then no, your pawn cannot go backward and turn into a queen. Loopholes, loopholes everywhere!

Re: Back, with questions

OK, thanks! Figured that was too easy. :)

This board is now closed.

Finally. =)
